Plant Phal

After a stem has died and fallen off a phal. orchid, how long does it take to grow back and flower again?

The plant is healthy otherwise.

Phals (and other orchid species) only bloom once a year. Here are some tips on care:

Orchids are surprisingly easy to grow and most people kill them by overwatering - this is the most disasterous thing to do to an orchid. Water only when the plant feels absolutely dry. Lift it up and see how heavy it is. If it's light then water, if not leave it alone. When you water depends on the temperatures and humidity in your home. Also, water in the morning so that the plant has time to absorb the moisture. Shake the pot well to get rid of excess water.

They are actually air plants and draw a lot of moisture from the air so humidity is a must. You can achieve this by placing the plant in a dish filled with rocks and water (make sure the bottom of the pot doesn't touch the water). A daily misting will make your plant very happy.

The orchid should have bright light, but no sun. The pot should be one that has holes all over it to allow aeration.

After it has bloomed (again, they bloom once a year, usually between December and February) don't fertilize it and cut back on the water. The plant needs to rest during this time. Once spring comes, and the orchid wants to grow again, start fertilizing (WalMart actually sells a good orchid fertilizer). A handful of charcoal on top will make the plant quite happy.

Orchids love to be outside. Just make sure that the plant is never exposed to direct sun and watch that the temperatures don't dip below 50F. Chances are you may never have to water it during this time (I don't) but keep checking the weight of the pot.
