After a stem has died and fallen off a phal. orchid, how long does it take to grow back and flower again?

The plant is healthy otherwise.

Phals (and other orchid species) only bloom once a year. Here are some tips on care:

Orchids are surprisingly easy to grow and most people kill them by overwatering - this is the most disasterous thing to do to an orchid. Water only when the plant feels absolutely dry. Lift it up and see how heavy it is. If it's light then water, if not leave it alone. When you water depends on the temperatures and humidity in your home. Also, water in the morning so that the plant has time to absorb the moisture. Shake the pot well to get rid of excess water.

They are actually air plants and draw a lot of moisture from the air so humidity is a must. You can achieve this by placing the plant in a dish filled with rocks and water (make sure the bottom of the pot doesn't touch the water). A daily misting will make your plant very happy.

The orchid should have bright light, but no sun. The pot should be one that has holes all over it to allow aeration.

After it has bloomed (again, they bloom once a year, usually between December and February) don't fertilize it and cut back on the water. The plant needs to rest during this time. Once spring comes, and the orchid wants to grow again, start fertilizing (WalMart actually sells a good orchid fertilizer). A handful of charcoal on top will make the plant quite happy.

Orchids love to be outside. Just make sure that the plant is never exposed to direct sun and watch that the temperatures don't dip below 50F. Chances are you may never have to water it during this time (I don't) but keep checking the weight of the pot.

The pseudobulbs of Odonto-glossum and Miltonia are much flattened and compressed; those of Coelogyne are very round, midstream, and creative; and those of Cymbidium very large, rounded, and solid. Dendrobium in many species lacks pseudobulbs, but even the long stick-like flower stems, along which the leaves grow in pairs, are qualified of storing food and moisture.

Orchids may also be classified as saprophytic, terrestrial, partly-terrestrial, and epiphytic. Here we will not be much worried with the saprophytes, natives of clement zones, since they also lack plants fully or have small inconspicuous plants of awareness only to the botanist.

The terrestrial orchids are also found in the temperate zones of both hemispheres. Among them are the tall Sobralia, elegant Cypripediums, Spiranthes, and fairy-flowered Habenaria. Calypso bulbosa (or borealis) is a native of the cold reaches of the Arctic.

North America abounds in native orchids, many of which are very common and not generally recognized as orchids. Most flashy of these, the Cypripedium or well-known "woman's slipper," has a wide sort of territory in the United States and has attractive foliage as well as flowers. However, few of the terrestrial orchids transplant well from their muddy homes, and it is perhaps best to request them out and have them in their native habitat.

By far the prime, most diverse, and most glitzy of the orchid family are included in the half-terrestrial and epiphytic groups. These are tropical or subtropical and live on trees in the rainswept coastal jungles or on bare rocks in the hot sun. Their elevation ranges from sea direct to two thousand feet above sea rank. cattleya orchid??

I have this cattleya orchid and it's dying I think because it has 3 leaves and one leaf has a really small yellow spot. This is because I went for holidays for a week and I watered it once but put lots of water that one time and I put it in the laundry with a window and it had a curtain and plenty of sun and it had 2 flowers. But when I came back they were dead. They smelt very nice and it has bark as soil. Please help what should i do?

Your cattleya while it does enjoy "light" can not tolerate direct intense sunlight and direct light from mid day is enough to cause what you are describing. I would cut back to watering only when dry, (not bone dry, but they don't like to have wet feet all the time) move it out of the direct light and feed it with an orchid fertilizer once ever couple of weeks. Cattleyas are great for the beginner orchid enthusiast, as they are not really all that difficult to grow, as long as you make sure it needs are covered.

Many people think that growing orchids is something that can only be done in big hothouses, however, you can grow orchids at home if you pick the right type and provide it with the right environment.

Orchids that work best for home growing are those that grow high in the trees hanging from the branches and get the nutrition from the rain, jungle air and decaying vegetation that their roots come in contact with. In order to grow these orchids at home, you’ll need to provide them with a growing area that comes close to their native environment.

Humidity

Orchids thrive in humid climates and if you want to grow them at home you’ll need to provide them with an area where they can have at least 50% humidity. In order to do this, you can set your orchid pots on a tray that is filled with water but not in the tray just above it so that the humidity from the water can come up with a water does not soak into the pot. may sting is also important to make sure there is sufficient in circulation so that the leaves and pedals can dry off properly.

Water

Growing them indoors can reduce the bugs immensely but you still have to be on the lookout for pests and disease.

To treat pests on your orchids, you should use pesticides from a local garden supply store. Be sure to always use them per instructions. If you can, try to go with organic pesticides that are easy on the environment.
